Genie for An Evening – Vow Renewal Perry and Wendy

April 8th, 2011 2 Comments
rule

I want to share with you today a lovely vow renewal ceremony that I was involved with a few weeks ago. Wendy and Perry have been married for 40 years and their daughter, Melanie, phoned me at the end of January to see if I could help them organise their vow renewal ceremony.

Melanie thought it would be a great present to buy her Mum and Dad A Genie for An Evening service. In fact we did it on a Sunday morning when all the family were visiting. The idea was to pull together Wendy and Perry’s vision for their special celebration and help them choose suppliers and outline their day. The vow renewal service was in early March so we only had a few weeks to sort everything out. Fortunately I have some great suppliers I can call on.

The morning I spent with Wendy, Perry and their family was such fun. Browsing through their old photographs from the year they got married and reminiscing about their life over the past 40 years was a true pleasure. Perry is one of life’s gentleman and has a great sense of humour. He and Wendy had a printing business so it was a great idea for them to make all of their stationery and really put themselves into the day. In fact that is how they first met when Perry was working in printing selling his wares. He asked Wendy out for lunch, he was smitten and the rest they say is history.

Wendy gave me a copy of one of her favourite pictures from their original wedding day. Part of my service is to write up a plan of the day’s events which Wendy and Perry could use as roadmap to help them visualise the events of the day. I was able to use the pictures Wendy gave to me to illustrate their day, as well as include ones of each of their family to keep as a memento.

I had a chat on the phone to Wendy before we met so that she could give me an idea of what she was thinking of for her day. I was then able to visit armed with lots of tips, advice and  pictures to illustrate Wendy’s ideas. On Wendy’s original wedding day it had been snowing and was so cold she had to use a fur muffle to keep warm, one of the priorities for their vow renewal was to have flowers as she had none on her original wedding day. Lovely ruby red ones to keep in with the theme of the ruby wedding anniversary. We chose simple but elegant table arrangements that the lovely Anne from Tiara and Flowers provided. You get a choice to keep the table centrepieces by just paying a little extra so you can give them to your guests as presents.

Other details we thought would work were having a montage of pictures on a table that told the story of Wendy and Perry’s life. It would also be good to use a signing frame with the original wedding picture in it for guests to sign. You can get these from Confetti. Later if they wanted to they can replace the picture from their favourite of the day.

These frames can be purchased from Confetti with different colour frames.

We came up with lovely red cupcakes with hearts and ruby red sprinkles for the reception. Using cupcakes meant that everyone could take one home so Wendy ordered little boxes which the cakes were packed in and handed out to guests as they left. CupCakes and Peonies provided the cakes for us. Perry wanted to arrive in style so we arranged a lovely car and of course Wendy and Perry wanted the ceremony to be photographed. Mark Zaccaria stepped up the mark and captured all the lovely moments of the day.

Wendy and Perry were able to have their ceremony in the same church that they married in, St Margarets in Great Barr. The reverend encouraged them to personalise their ceremony so Perry’s nephew performed a reading and Melanie, Perry’s daughter read something special to them as the end of the ceremony. The reverend did a family blessing too which was a lovely idea.

The reception was held at Fairlawns Hotel and Spa in Aldridge,  the weather was surprisingly kind to us and was mild and sunny. Melanie composed a list of tunes on her IPOD for the background music and guest were greeted with a champagne reception following the ceremony. Wendy and Perry’s home made stationery looked great and everyone remarked about the little touches.

How can I write as if I was there? Well I was. The lovely Wendy and Perry phoned me to say that they had enjoyed my service so much they wanted me to share their day with them. It was an absolute pleasure to be part of the proceedings instead of looking over them.

Here are some great moments of the day.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Wendy and Perry for including me in their very special family day. It certainly was a lovely change to be a guest.

Real Weddings – Anna and Mark

Nearly two weeks ago The Wedding Genie had the pleasure to coordinate this beautiful country barn wedding in West Sussex. Anna and Mark worked so hard on the details of the day, the decor was just fantastic. From the handmade hearts that were hung on the wall of the barn to the fabulous flowers and fabulously sophisticated white backlit trendy bar. Anna wanted a “White Company” look and feel, she definitely achieved it. The full blog will be posted in a few weeks but we have a sneak preview from the extremely talented and award winning documentary photographer Julie Kim. Julie was a joy to be with on the day, calm laid back and totally unobtrusive.

You can see from just these few pictures what a fabulous eye Julie has for capturing the essence of they day. When we post the full blog we will ask Julie for her thoughts on what makes her favourite photographs. Until then here is a taster, enjoy!

I love this one!

Wow what a stunning couple and that dress!

I had a great day helping everything run to time and making sure all the details were just as Anna planned they would be. When the rest of the pictures are ready I will write up more about the day to give inspiration to any brides that are planning a barn wedding with an ultra sophisticated look for their special day.

If you want to ask me how to achieve this or book me to help coordinate your special day. Give me a call for a chat and to check our availability.

Until next time, happy planning.

Inspirational Brides To Be – Wedding Blog

August 19th, 2010 No Comments

There are many wedding blogs out there that are inspirational, but some of the best are written by brides to be themselves! When you start to think about planning your wedding it’s a huge task and who knows where to start? It’s not like all your friends are getting married at the same time, so sometime’s there is no one to talk to or bounce ideas off or ask for advice. What better way than to make a diary of your wedding journey and share it with like minded brides. Suddenly you are not alone and its a chance to share your creativity and unique ideas to help other brides in your position.

I found Purple and Pearls quite a while ago, it’s written by the very creative and talented Laura Francis and I was hooked. Not only is it a pretty site to surf around but its funny, inspiring and written from the heart. It gives a fabulous insight into wedding planning and shows how you can make your mark on your dream day without breaking the bank.

There are lovely ideas and images to help inspire you, I love looking around myself, I particularly like all the posts relating to the Candy Tables. I am often intrigued why brides to be start a blog and what they get from it, I asked Laura a few searching questions and she did not disappoint.

What Made You Start Purple and Pearls Blog?

Purple and Pearls started out as a way for me to document my time as a bride to be.  I’ve always kept diaries and essentially that is what Purple and Pearls is.  It’s my online diary, I want to be able to look back in years to come and remember every detail about planning our wedding that I know I could easily forget.

What do you think you give to other brides who are planning their weddings?

I’m a DIY bride.  Anything I make myself, like my chalkboard heart place cards, invitations, candy table signs and wine charm favours, I write about and explain exactly how I did it.  I’ve had quite a few comments from other brides-to-be about how easy the projects I take on look and have been inspired to have a go themselves.

I’m also very honest, it’s not always rosy in the run up to the wedding and things do get stressful.  I share my concerns, worries and mistakes (such as the spelling error on my invitations I noticed just days before they were due to go out!)

I don’t get paid for writing Purple and Pearls either, I have no sponsors which means any recommendations I make for suppliers are based purely on my own opinions and experiences.

Laura’s gorgeous chalk board place cards

How has it helped you?

I enjoy writing Purple and Pearls so much.  It keeps my thoughts in order; I write a monthly countdown post with jobs that I need to do in the up coming weeks, which helps me keep track of what I’m suppose to be doing.  It’s also put me in touch with other brides who write their own blogs and lots of different wedding industry professionals.  I feel like I’m part of a little community and if I need advice, suggestions, support or even just a chat there is always someone around either to comment on the blog or on Twitter to talk to.

Do you think your wedding will be different because of it and have you learned loads about the wedding industry?

Writing Purple and Pearls has made me more aware of other blogs written by suppliers, other brides and industry professionals.  I have 100’s of different blogs in my Google Reader and they have definitely opened my eyes.  Starting out I didn’t know that I could break away from the more traditional side of the wedding industry, I didn’t know that I didn’t have to have sugared almonds as favours and I’ve learnt that it’s ok to make our wedding day reflect our personalities.  I’ve been inspired to create details myself, which means certain aspects of our wedding will be unique to us and hopefully our guests will appreciate that too.

I wouldn’t say that I’ve learnt loads about the wedding industry, but I have met (online and in real life) some fabulous wedding professionals who have all helped me out in some way.

Laura is using the shots from their engagement shoot for their guest book.

If you have what are the good things and what are the bad?

Getting to know the wedding industry has made me realize how much choice there is, there are so many different ways you can personalize your wedding day to suit you.

I’ve also learnt to shop around; unfortunately a few suppliers find it acceptable to up their prices just because it’s a wedding.  Throughout my planning I’ve learnt to compare prices and do a lot more research before committing to a service.  For example I saved over £200 on our wedding flowers because I didn’t settle for the first quote I received.

Having said that all of the suppliers involved in our wedding day are wonderful – it was one of our requirements during the planning process for us to get on with our suppliers.  There is nothing better than your florist or cake maker to be just as excited about your wedding as you are!

Its good to hear that. Suppliers should be interested in your wedding just as much as you are. It’s one of the traits that we like to know a supplier has before they go onto our Wedding Genie recommended list. Quality and good service are a given if you use any of The Wedding Genie suppliers. Many of our brides are just like Laura. They want us to help their day go exactly as they planned. Leaving them to enjoy every minute knowing someone they trust is looking out for all their little details.

Well I for one can’t wait to see the gorgeous wedding that Laura paints such a beautiful picture of on her blog. I will post it on my blog if Laura doesn’t mind, we can’t possibly not follow up this lovely story.

In the meantime if you want to know how to start to plan and find inspiration, why not book one of our new Bridal Workshops. They are fun, informative and I promise you will go home armed with all the hints tips and advice you could possibly need. You can enter our competition too for a pair of tickets to one of our classes in October or November.

Until next time, happy planning.

Wedding Style and Theme – Vintage Heaven

As part of our blogs on Style and Theme I promised you more of the most beautiful and cost effective vintage finds. Yesterday I came across this lovely shop called Vintagetwee on Etsy. Its absolutely fabulous. At The Wedding Genie we are all about personalising your wedding without breaking the bank but doing it with panache. Check out these lovelies.

These sweet little romantic favour boxes are so elegant and stylish. The special pillow-shaped boxes have been hand crafted using excerpts from a 1940s love letter from a young girl named Anna to her soldier sweetheart during World War Two.

Each box has been wrapped in different parts of the writing and features a photo of the couple taken from the actual letter itself. The words across the boxes read: Cherish, Adore, Hope and Wish. They can be personalised too if you want to use them as jewellery boxes for presents for your bridesmaids.

How about these confetti cones? At our wedding last Sunday we had the most fun capturing the confetti shot when the couple came out of the church. These would look so beautiful for your guests and super chic. Our bride was a musician so these would have been just up her street.

Or more romantic perhaps?

When you are trying to ensure your guests are entertained at their tables how about getting them to chat to each other by adding these little gems onto the table? You can double them up as favours or just place them in the middle for everyone to help themselves to. They can even be used as place names if they are personalised. They contain different topics.

I am having a great time researching these blogs, next week its all about the stationery. Whats more I promise to only find you items you can buy in the UK. This shop is listed on Etsy but the seller is English. If you have any great vintage finds to share please contact me. If you want The Wedding Genie to help you style your wedding we would be delighted to help.

Until next time, happy planning.

Wedding Tips and Advice – Style and Theme

June 2nd, 2010 2 Comments

I have been so inspired this week by my own gorgeous clients. Their weddings are to die for! The reason why is simple, they are thinking about the small details and making sure their personalities shine through in their wedding planning. Some of them are choosing vintage themes, which are very popular at the moment, so I thought I would take a look at why this genre is so inviting.

Vintage style allows you to add glamour and sophistication to your wedding day. You can use a mix of old and new. Perhaps thats why it works so well, we feel comfortable with some of our old favourites. Whether its your grandmothers lovely jewellery that inspires you and means so much, or the lace from your Mum’s dress that inspired your thoughts, overall its a comfortable feel. One that if done well can make the most of whats new and old whilst giving a nod to very sophisticated bygone times.

Over the next few blogs I am going to find some lovely vintage pieces you can use for the various elements of your wedding day. Browsing today I found a lovely site, My Wedding Party, which does the most gorgeous luggage labels to use as place names, or on your gifts to the wedding party. Check out their cards too. I wanted to buy some right there and then. Stationery creates a lovely impression and ties a theme together.

These are just gorgeous

You don’t have to spend a fortune if you just shop around and do a little careful research. Now I am off to find more fabulous things for next time. If you want help to style or theme your wedding, or just help getting started I would love to hear from you. Call or email me.

Until next time, happy planning.

Wedding Planning for Men – Five Reasons Why You Should Listen To The Groom’s Weird Wedding Ideas

April 15th, 2010
rule

I love this blog this week from I am Staggered because it does say that no matter what your style or personality put yourself into your wedding.

One of the main accusations that gets thrown at grooms’ wedding planning ideas is that, well, they’re often a bit weird. He wants to wear an Elvis jumpsuit, or have thrash metal as the arrival music, you know the sort of thing. I was reminded of this the other day when admiring this picture, which I think is awesome beyond recognition. Look at him. He’s having fun and putting some of his (admittedly odd) personality into the day. In honour of this katana-wielding hero, I thought I’d try and mount a defence of why you should listen to some of the groom’s weirder planning tips.

1) He Wants To Say His Vows in Klingon

Klingon is an incredibly efficient language, did you know that it only has one word for the colours green, blue and yellow? Think of how much time that would save when planning the colour scheme of a wedding. APPROVED.

2) He Wants You To Dress As Princess-Leia-Hutt-Prisoner-Era

Yes, it’s a bit weird that he wants you to dress in a metal bikini and stick Danish pastries on your head, but it’s only because he thinks you would look super hot and as long as he’s not dressed as Skywalker (that’s her brother, remember?), where’s the harm? If you absolutely have to refuse, why not promise it to him for the honeymoon? PART-APPROVED.

3) He Wants To Arrive In the TARDIS

Firstly, impress him by revealing that you know that TARDIS stands for Time And Relative Dimensions In Space; then say yes, on the condition that you can have the reception in it afterwards, that thing could comfortably seat 250. APPROVED.

4) He Wants To Write His Wedding Vows in HTML

Haven’t you heard the news?  Geek wedding vows are all the rage and if your bloke is a bit of a nerd then what’s wrong with him expressing himself as only he can – it means it’s from the heart. APPROVED.

5) He Wants A Team of Ewoks To Re-enact the Forest Moon of Endor Party Scene

Ok, that is odd. You’re either going to have to find really compliant children or go to a specialist casting agency and either way that’s going to cost you. DENIED.

Staggered is the UK’s leading men’s wedding website offering help and advice to groomsbest men and fathers of the bride. Whether it’s mens wedding suits, stag-do-ideas or perhaps some help with engagement rings and proposals, men involved in weddings need to look at www.iamstaggered.com

Just as the wedding planning season is about to start full pelt, I thought I would take a minute to think about what really matters when you are planning your wedding. Its the one big day in your life when you declare to the world and each other, that you want to spend your lives together. As you go through the whirlwind of wedding planning its very easy to get so bogged down with all the details and organising, that you can forget the true goal of the day, which is to promise to love and take care of each other.

The Wedding Genie’s passion is to plan and coordinate weddings but we also want to ensure that you start your married life with a good foundation for a long and happy marriage. With this in mind before you even start to think about finding the venue, dress etc have a think about the fundamentals of what you promise to vow to each other.

Check out one of the best weddings I have ever seen. Yes its fiction but it illustrates how simply it can be to get married.Yes its fantastic to have the biggest budget in the world and spend as much money as you like on that designer wedding dress or the most exclusive venue, food and wine, but at the end of the day its your promises to each other that will stand the test of time.

So if you want to get married on a shoe string it does not mean that your wedding won’t be anything less special than a wedding with the budget of a small nation. Its what you put into the day that counts. If you get caught up in the whirlwind of wedding planning and loose sight, take a minute and check back here to see what is really important.

Until next time, happy planning.

Wedding Day Details – Involving Your Guests

March 12th, 2010 No Comments
rule

This week we have been running our top tips and ideas to help make your wedding day personal and special. It been all about involving your guests. Here are a few more ideas to inspire you.

  • If you are having favours on the tables why not make them yourself if you have time. Perhaps little handmade sweets. Miniature jars of jam or cookies. Edible favours are probably the best value as your guests will usually eat them then and there and not leave them behind at the end of the evening. Wrap them in cellophane tied with ribbon to match your them and label them with a personal message thanking your guests for coming. You can write the guests names on one side and the message on the other. That way you can save on place cards.
  • Think about displaying a story of your relationship using pictures of you and your fiance. Why not ask your friends to send you a picture if they have one, of you and them. Its a great way to involve your guests  and a great talking point. You can get them printed very cheaply and hang them up with miniature pegs on ribbon. Perhaps put them in an area of your reception where its a bit quieter and your guests can browse the pictures and chat whilst you are having yor photographs taken.
  • Another option is to make a powerpoint presentation of your pictures and have it running whilst you are having your photographs taken. Its easy and cheap to do and is quite a talking point.
  • Guest books are a great way of involving your guests but why not do something a bit different. Have little cards like luggage type labels that your guests can write on and perhaps hang on a wishing tree. After you can collect them up and put them in an album.

  • A lovely idea I found the other day from a lovely bride in the Feb/March edition of Wedding was they asked their guests to create a lasting memory of their day.  Postcards were pegged onto a clothes line and numbered to correspond to a month of the year. Every guest took one home with them, wrote their memory of the day on the back and then sent them back in the relevant month. How lovely to receive these over the coming months.
  • Personalise table names, your guests will really appreciate the little details. Perhaps use the places that you travelled, your favourite films, flowers you love. I am quite a shopaholic so our tables were named after shops I loved. My friends loved sitting on tables called Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges etc.
  • If you can afford it I know its a splurge but why not instead of favours hire a Silhouettest. Its really unusual, your guests get a cut out of them in paper mounted on card to take home. If you employ one of these guys they even do a full length one of the bride and groom too.

I hope you have enjoyed our series this week. Please send us your suggestions and we can post them. If you would like me to help with inspiration for your wedding day why not call or email me to see how we can help.

Wedding Day Details – Involving your Guests

March 11th, 2010 No Comments

Today’s blog is filled with more inspiration and great ideas to help involve your guests in your wedding day. We guarantee spending a bit of time and effort on this will really help your day be memorable.

  • If any of your guests are creative they may like to help with your stationery, or make your cake. Its lovely when your guests have had that very personal input into your day. Its a great way of giving you a wedding present too, and you  save on your budget.
  • To capture the essence and fun of the day use a Polaroid instamatic camera. Ask the best man and ushers to go round and invite your guests to take pictures of themselves during the wedding. You will find there are some very inventive ways that your guests will show you how much fun they are having. I know we used one at our wedding and my wedding party went and sat on all the instruments that were set up for the evening band which looked hilarious. Bridesmaids playing the drums!. We were so touched by the messages and thoughts behind the pictures. Instant Forever do packages for this that include the camera and guest book. A tip from the top is to source the camera from Ebay, you can always sell it again after the wedding.
  • You can also put cameras on the tables for your guests to use. Collect them up at the end of the day and see what you get. Another alternative is to leave CD’s on the tables for your guests so that they can download their pictures and send them to you.
  • Have a basket of props, such as false moustaches, noses and funny glasses. Perhaps an empty picture frame that your guests can spend some time dressing up and taking quirky pictures. You can make signs which are really effective too. Take a look at these ideas from Rock My Wedding.

Rock My Wedding

  • Out of Town Bags/Welcome Bags are a great idea to make your guests feel welcome. If you are making a weekend of it and many of your guests are staying in the hotel you can ask the hotel to place them in everyone’s rooms. At our wedding we filled them with little chocolates, small miniatures bottles of sparkling wine for ladies, red wine for the men, Candles, matches, tissues and handmade bath bombs. We also left a little note welcoming everyone and thanking them for coming. It did not cost a fortune. You can source really good quality items from Ebay, it just took some time and effort.
