Over the last few months I have made it my misson to meet more fantastic suppliers so I have a great choice for my clients.

The one thing about being independent is that I am tied to no one and I get to choose the right team to work with my couples. Nothing is more important! Get this right and the wedding day is a dream. Not only do the bride and groom have the most fabulous time planning their day but everyone who works on the actual day has a blast too!!

Today I am introducing a really brilliant lady Kathryn Parr. Kathryn is one of the best hair and makeup artists around and the latest supplier to join my Wedding Genie Dream Team. We are going to work together on two of my weddings later in the year and I just can’t wait.

I always think it’s good to know a little about your suppliers, their personality and skills. I asked Kathryn to tell us a bit about herself.

How long have you been a Hair and Makeup Specialist?

I am very lucky. My career has taken me around the world!  At 19 I went to work in the USA for 10 years, and then for the last 8 years I have been based in Marbella, Spain working and creating amazing brides.  It’s time for me to come back to the UK and share my knowledge from around the world!

What products do you work with?

Over the years I have tried and tested so many different products, and I am happiest working with a range of products for the hair including Fudge, Schwarzkopf and Wella, I find that they really make the hair glossy and shiny, and are able to make the hair have lasting durability during the day without feeling sticky and heavy. For make up I use MAC, Giorgio Armani, Channel, Shishedo, Bobbi Brown., and also Airbrush HD  make up The high end products photograph  amazingly well and really look fantastic on the skin.

You just mentioned Airbrush HD make up, what’s that ?

Its new, and its exciting….

A bride faces the same scenarios that filmmakers and TV producers face – the need for a flawless finish that lasts and doesn’t move!

Airbrush Make-Up provides this and much more. A long lasting make-up that requires no touch ups, meaning the bride and bridesmaids need not worry about their make-up degenerating throughout that special day.

You may ask ‘Why have film make-ups not been used before for occasions such as weddings?’ Before Airbrush, some were all simply too heavy to wear and didn’t allow the skin to breathe. The advent of silicone-airbrushed make-up now enables a flawless finish and a light, weightless feel without compromise on durability.

Airbrush  Make-Up will enhance your natural beauty, guaranteed to give you that natural glow. Airbrush Make-Up brides can’t help but feel outstanding on their wedding day

The benefits of Airbrush make up for brides are:-

  • Flawless finish
  • Weightless application
  • Perfect for even the most sensitive skin
  • Long Lasting
  • Allows skin the breathe
  • No touch ups required
  • Smooth and natural finish

Do you always recommend a hair and make up trial?

Yes….this is a must so both myself and the bride feel happy with the Brides look on her big day!

Do brides usually know how they would like to wear their hair and Make up prior to the trial?

Not always!  I have a few brides that know what they DON’T want, as opposed to what they do want. But during the consultation at the trial we will work together to create a plan of styles that we will try to see which ones you like the most!

What usually happens  during the trial?

I will usually ask the bride to take a look through magazines to see any bridal looks that she might like the look of, it doesn’t matter if you like the back of one style and the front of another, but by bringing all the pictures along to the trial we can piece together the perfect style!  Usually I will trial out 3 various looks to see which one you feel most comfortable with, and then take photos for you to look back on.  Its also a great idea to bring along any hair accessories and veil that you may be wearing so we can see how they look together! By the end of the trial you will be 100% happy!

What Can I expect during the preparation on my wedding day ?

You can expect lots of fun and laughter with your closest family and friends!  The preparations are all part of your wedding day, and you will enjoy the relaxing atmosphere whilst you are having your hair and make up done, and of course enjoying a glass of champagne !

A few weeks prior to the wedding, I will email you a little time schedule to ensure that everything runs on time- thankfully in 18 years I have never had a late bride, so rest assured!

I have worked with many brides over the years, and each bride is as individual as you are! I love doing what I do. People often ask me about what my job entails. After many years I have come to a conclusion that it’s more than just a job, it’s my passion!

It’s ensuing that the lead up to your big day is worry and stress free, it’s about being calm where calmness is required, its about making sure you feel as though your with a friend, and finally its about making sure there is a tissue at the ready !  Usually the first person the have a little tear is…..ME!……when the bride see´s her family for the first time before they are ready to leave for the church… thank god for waterproof mascara !

Many thanks Julie and look forward to working with you soon

Kathryn x

I have some more fantastic people to introduce you to so keep popping back to see who else has joined my Genie Dream Team.

Until next time, happy planning.

Alternative to Wedding Flowers

March 30th, 2012 2 Comments

One of my clients is allergic to flowers so we had to think about other decor that could be used at the wedding. Flowers are so gorgeous and give a great atmosphere so I wanted to find something that would create the same wow factor as flowers do. Well there is no shortage of ideas all over the internet so here are a few of my favourites. Also many of these ideas can work really well if you are on a budget or just want to have something really unique  and that big different.

First of all let’s take a look at wedding bouquets and corsages. There are some very talented people out there. If you love crafts, jewels or anything papery these are for you.

All these are from Paper My Happy. I certainly feel happy when I see them!

Now lets take a look at centrepieces! From paper to edible. All guests love to eat gorgeous morsels at weddings and some of these can double as favours which is an added bonus and saves on the budget.

I love this idea of using cup cakes as centrepieces. You can use them like this or arrange them beautifully on a tiered cake display.

This is very interesting! You know how much your wedding costs  - but do you have any idea what it costs your guests and family to spend the day with you? You might be surprised to hear it’s over £500 for a guest, more for friends and family members .

The guys over at Chillisauce sent me this infograph to share with you that breaks down all the items your friends and family spend their money on. It’s compiled from information by the Telegraph and Lloyds.

Just think how many weddings you have been to over the last few years and then add up what you spent!! Lol yes pretty eye opening.

All the more reason for you to ensure your guests feel part of your day. They will notice the personal details of that you can be sure.

Until next time, happy planning.

Bridalicious – The Fit Wife

Wedding Planner, Coordinator, Birmingham, Lichfield, Staffordshire, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, CoventryThis is week 3 of our wedding fitness tips to help get you lean taut and terrific. Gail our resident PT is a mine of information when it comes to fitness and lifestyle. Not only is Gail brilliant at getting you to look and feel  fit but she is so inspiring with her can do attitude. Check out Gail’s pearls of wisdom this week.

I am sharing with you life style changing tips and how re wiring how we think about health, food and exercise can help you to reach your wedding day goals and maintain them easily for life.

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he”
King Solomon (circa 10th century BC)

These are among the greatest words in wisdom but what do they mean “For as he thinketh in his heart,so is he”?

What you think in the heart is what you believe to be true.
Beliefs are simply repeated thoughts with strong feelings attached to them like “I find it hard to lose weight”, “I catch colds easily” “I hate my legs they always stay fat”
A belief is when you have made your mind up and there is no way you are going to be convinced to think any different. But whatever you believe and think is true actually will be true for you, whatever you give out you will get back.

Something that we need to start to do is love our body and it will then start to love you back. How can we not love our body whatever the shape, size, ailment? We are an amazing piece of work and with knowledge and belief we can enhance what we were born with.

So often we flippantly complain about how we look, when we should be looking a little deeper and seeing our body for the awesome machine it is. So today I want you to take a body scan and think about what your machine has to do just to keep you alive and start to love it as you would that new car, puppy or what you worked hard to buy last month.

All cells in the body have a role to play. Some cells are leaders of particular organs and they manage and direct all working cells in their region like heart, brain, liver, kidneys and lungs. The leader cell of an organ directs and manages all other cells working in that organ ensuring order and harmony so the organ works perfectly.

Patrol cells travel throughout the blood vessels of your body to maintain order and peace. When there is a disturbance such as a scratch or infection then the Patrol signal alert and the appropriate repair team rushes to that area. For a scratch – the blood clotting team would be first to the scene and they work to arrest the blood flow, next the tissue and skin team arrives to repair mending tissue and sealing the skin.

If an intruder enters your body, like bacteria or a virus, the memory cells immediately take a snapshot, the imprint is checked against their records to see if there is a match for previous intruders. If there is a match then the memory cells notify the relevant attack team to destroy the intruder. If no match then the memory cells open up a new file on the intruder and all the attack teams are summoned to move in and destroy it.

Whichever attack team is successful in destroying the intruder is then recorded by memory cells in their files. If the intruder returns, then the memory cells will know who they are dealing with and how to deal with them. You have a complete natural pharmacy working inside you.

All cells must work as a team 24 hrs the day for their entire life. There sole purpose is to maintain the life and health in your body.
You have around a 100 trillion cells working non stop to give you life all of them under your command and you are instructing them with your thoughts, feelings and beliefs.Whatever you believe about your body your cells believe it too, they don’t question anything you feel, think or believe they just hear everything you think, feel and believe. If you think or feel you have a weight problem then your cells will receive the order to keep your body in the situation of a weight problem..

So think what do you love and what do you want of your body because your cells are your most loyal subjects.

Start to  change what you believe by noticing the things you love about your body, if you find you are struggling to do this then think how amazing it is that your body can ‘float in water’ walk, move in different directions, become pregnant, feed a child, kick a football…the list of amazing things your own peronal body can do is endless and how fantastic we have the gift of movement, however limited.

Once you start to love your body you will begin to take better care of it, so give your cells commands like ”I feel amazing today.” Imagine and feel having the health you want in your body, give love for the perfect weight, perfect body, perfect health.

Be grateful and love all you do have and your body will change into whatever you want but it will only do it through feelings of love, not anger and frustration.

“Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease” Hippocrates (circa 460 BC-Circa 370 BC (Father of western medicine)

quotations and exerts taken from the Power- Rhonda Byrne.

Wow! I don’t know about you but after reading that I feel incredibly inspired. If you missed the last two weeks post, check them our here and here. Gail runs her own studio in Lichfield and also arranged fitness holidays which you can check out here.

Until next time, happy planning and fitness.

Wedding Genie Venue Roundup – The West Midlands

March 7th, 2012 No Comments
rule

On Sunday I met some lovely couples at the Alrewas Hayes wedding fayre. There were so many that were newly engaged and were in the process of looking for a venue so these posts this week and last should be very useful.

Last time I featured how to search for and choose a venue. This week I have posted an article I did for the lovely wedding blog Adore by Chloe. I thought I had better pop it here too for everyone to see. In my opinion these are some of the best venues in the midlands. I chose each one because of their various styles, reviews and what they were offering.

Chloe asked for specific types so check them out. Let me know if you have held your wedding at any of them and your feedback.

The aim of this feature is to provide a roundup of the best wedding venues in The West Midlands, divided into the following categories

Best small and intimate venue

Venue: Hotel Du Vin

Location: Birmingham

Approximate capacity for weddings: 14-24, 40-84, Civil ceremonies to suit these numbers in two licensed rooms.

Wedding Planner, Coordinator, Birmingham, Lichfield, Staffordshire, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Warwickshire

Hotel Du Vin

What makes it unique?

This hotel is a converted eye hospital and whilst being very grand it is has lovely beautifully decorated small intimate rooms. The Opus One is a stunning private dining room with access onto a courtyard. The room has a bespoke mural, wooden floors and gorgeous lighting but is dark and dramatic. The bigger room Speyside Glenlivet has more natural light but is majestic with a mirrored hall. Both perfect for civil ceremonies and dining. Your guests can stay in the hotel and everyone has a city base. There is no travel for anyone involved once you are checked in and everyone can relax and take the opportunity to make a fabulous weekend of the event. This venue is just lovely for small intimate gatherings but who also want sophistication and style. There is also a promotion of 20% discount running currently.

Other venues worth considering: Netherstowe House Lichfield, Gorgeous venue for your reception. Marry in church or at the registry office and then treat your wedding party to a small intimate private dining experience here.

Rustic Venue

Venue: Packington Moor

Location: Packington Moor Farm, Lichfield Staffordshire, WS14 9QB

Approximate capacity for weddings: Caters for a civil service of 120 seated guests. 160 guests for a wedding breakfast and then up to 180 for the evening’s entertainment in the Malt Barn.

Wedding Planner, Coordinator, Birmingham, Lichfield, Staffordshire, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Warwickshire

Wedding Planner, Coordinator, Birmingham, Lichfield, Staffordshire, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Warwickshire

Packington Moor

What makes it unique?

The venue is a working farm, which is quite unique in itself so really is worthy of the title “Rustic Venue”. Although it’s a rural setting it is easily accessible for guests to travel to which is a bonus. There are various areas of the barn such as the Oat Barn with its vaulted ceiling and minstrel’s gallery, which adds grandeur and style.  The food is sourced locally and you can use their Packington free-range pork and ham. Hog roasts are a speciality of course, quite the package for a rustic choice. The inside of the barn is simple yet stunning and can be decorated to your liking (it does not need much it already is quite lovely). The venue provides fairy lights wrapped around the oak beans, which give a real wow factory in the evening. The gardens are lovely and just outside is a pretty courtyard for your guests to spill out onto for the drinks reception. The venue is for exclusive use so there is no fear of another wedding on the horizon.

Other venues worth considering: The Ashes in Staffordshire is just heavenly with amazing grounds and excellent reviews and staff, along with Redhouse Barn in Worcestershire which is modern with state of art equipment but totally fabulous and quite new. One more with a very rustic feel is The Curradine Barns in Shrawley, Worcestershire another working farm. This is an established venue too with excellent facilities opposite a church too.

Most impressive venue

Venue: Hagley Hall

Location: Hagley, Worcestershire, DY9 9LG

Approximate capacity for weddings: Civil Ceremonies of 110 with reception and wedding breakfast. Higher numbers can be accommodated with a marquee in the grounds.

Wedding Planner, Coordinator, Birmingham, Lichfield, Staffordshire, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Warwickshire

Hagley Hall

What makes it unique?:

The history surrounding this venue is outstanding and the décor amazing. George, 1st Lord Lyttelton in the 1750’s, built this Georgian Palladian mansion. It is still family owned and kept in immaculate condition. There are various rooms to marry in which are all quite breathtaking. The Long Gallery with stunning chandeliers and views of the deer park, then there is The State Room with its ornate plasterwork and quintessential English views of the village church and cricket ground just opposite. You can  marry in the church if you qualify. The staff, food and service are stunning and all the reviews are outstanding. There is a newly built entertainment suite beautifully decorated with a disco, lounge and bar so that it feels like two venues in one.

You can even use a marquee in the grounds for larger weddings. This venue really has everything as well as being for exclusive use. There is no accommodation but there are many hotels close by and the venue has a list to choose from and on the day the Bride can use the bedroom in the house.

Other venues worth considering:

Birtsmorton Court, this has a medieval moat surrounding it and the gardens are truly fantastic, this is situated in Worcestershire. Ettington Park Hotel is a Neo Gothic mansion 6 miles from Stratford upon Avon. Think luxury, ornate paintings, gorgeous grounds and the beauty of a Spa and accommodation.

Recommended for unique or alternative weddings, something a bit different?

Venue: Custard Factory (The Old Library)

Location: Birmingham

Approximate capacity for weddings: Civil ceremony up to 150

Wedding Planner, Coordinator, Birmingham, Lichfield, Staffordshire, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Warwickshire

The Custard Factory

What makes it unique?:

This building is a huge space of 2,500 square feet that you can do with exactly as you like. If you want a perfect blank canvas set in a very quirky location, the centre of Birmingham’s media district. The rooms are bright with vaulted ceilings, skylights and arched diamond leaded windows. There is The Gallery for reception drinks with the most fantastic art on show, it really is a unique space best described as modern open plan enclosed in traditional Victorian elegance dating back to the 1880’s. There is no accommodation but if you are looking for something completely different this is the place. Of course its central location makes it easily accessible for guests, hotels and the city centre. This is just one of the spaces.

Other venues worth considering:

The Botanical Gardens, your wedding reception is approached through the Tropical Glass House and you get to have full use of the gardens too. For something really different try Drayton Manor Park. Warwick Castle is another great idea. Very different, you do have to marry later in the day here but the rooms are stunning and you can have your wedding reception amongst the nights of old. You can share your day with the peacocks here too in the lovely grounds. Fabulous photographic opportunity.

Best modern and stylish venue

Venue: Hampton Manor

Location: Solihull

Approximate capacity for weddings: 70 in the Mawson room or in two rooms combined up to 120. All rooms are licensed for civil ceremonies.

Wedding Planner, Coordinator, Birmingham, Lichfield, Staffordshire, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Warwickshire

Hampton Manor

What makes it unique?:

Damien Lovegrove the photographer describes this as a “World Class Landmark Venue”. Although it feels like a countryside venue it is decorated in the sleekest modern style. The décor is exquisite with a fabulous staircase and chandelier to die for. The rooms are contemporary and indulgent. Although this is a country house it is one of the most accessible in the UK. It is set in 45 acres of mature historic gardens with 12 individually designer designed bedrooms. This venue is truly scrumptious and for exclusive use too. The reviews by couples are superb. The venue is pure luxury

Other venues worth considering:

Compton Verney is a beautiful award winning art gallery in Warwick. With ornate décor and marble floor and there is a lakeside marquee too. Very chic and trendy. Austin Court is situated in Birmingham’s Brindley Place. Their waterside room overlooks the canal. It is a lovely space modern and minimalist that you can decorate yourself. Staff are brilliant and very accommodating.

Top choice for budget weddings

Venue: The National Motorcycle Museum

Location: Birmingham opposite the NEC

Approximate capacity for weddings: Package price of 40 day guests up to 60 evening.

What makes it unique?:

Quirky surroundings, very cost conscious and a full package including photography, ceremony, food, wine and hotel stay for £2,950. Extra guests can be added for £44.50.

Other venues worth considering:

The Manor Hotel, Get married for £2,012 in 2012. Numbers as above but without the wine. Also try The Windmill Village Hotel they are promoting all inclusive packages for £2,995 which caters for 60 day guests and 120 evening. The hotels all have grounds for photographs and plenty of accommodation with special rates for your guests.

For that countryside feel…

Venue: Moxhul Hall Hotel

Location: Sutton Coldfield

Approximate capacity for weddings: Depending on the rooms, Civil services 60. Wedding Breakfast 42, 60 and the up to 180 in the marquee.

Wedding Planner, Coordinator, Birmingham, Lichfield, Staffordshire, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Warwickshire

What makes it unique?:

It is incredibly pretty and one of the first venues to acquire a licence for outside weddings in the “secret garden” Marry under the gazebo in Calliope’s garden during April to October. Then continue your country theme into the beautiful marquee. It has a lovely intimate atmosphere even though the venue can cater for bigger numbers. There are 18 newly refurbished very stylish bedrooms and the family that run it are constantly updating the facilities. The food is delicious, only one wedding per day takes place and the reviews are outstanding.

Other venues worth considering: Garfton Manor, Bromsgrove, superb Elizabethean Manor, with a private chapel and even a wedding dress shop in the grounds.

Your personal favourite venue in your area?

Venue: Alrewas Hayes

Location: Lichfield

Approximate capacity for weddings: This venue can cater from 10 up to 600. For civil ceremony it can be 45 up to 120 depending on the room.

Wedding Planner, Coordinator, Birmingham, Lichfield, Staffordshire, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Warwickshire

Alrewas Hayes

Why is it your favourite?

I love this venue because it allows the couple to do exactly as they like. The family that run it are totally dedicated to the couples that book with them. It is a Grade 11 listed Queen Anne residence, a family home. It has been decorated throughout with a fusion of contemporary and period furnishings. There is a gorgeous lake that you can view from the ceremony room and a fabulous all weather Marquee. The food is provided in house and the owners Bonnie and Toby will accommodate almost every taste. There is a fabulous wedding coordinator Georgina, who will manage your day with expertise, calm and professionalism. There are six beautiful contemporary bedrooms, which include the spacious bridal suite that you can use for your preparations. The whole venue is accessed through a lovely lane and is very private with a walled courtyard garden. The Marquee is gorgeous with a separate seating area, fabulous lighting and dance floor and is decorated to a very high standard.

Well thats my roundup. Please let me know the venues you love. It’s always good to recommend first hand.

Until next time, happy planning.

Finding the Perfect Venue – Your final choice

March 2nd, 2012 No Comments
rule

Our final blog this week gives you the last few pieces of information you need to know to make the right decision when choosing your venue. Next week we will feature a new venue we found in our local area. First of all here is the rest of the advice you need to make the perfect choice. If you missed that last two click here and here to catch up first.

So far we have covered how to search for the venue and what to ask and think about before you decide if its right for you.

Before making the final decision here are a few questions you must ask before you sign the contract.

  • Will there be more than one wedding on the day? If so how do the venue manage this? You do not want to meet another couple or their guests.
  • Are there any restrictions on entertainment, such as allowing chocolate fountains, fireworks, confetti or candles?
  • What time will the evening end and what time is last orders at the bar?
  • If exclusive use is offered confirm the start and end times.
  • Is there an additional charge if your guest list should fall below the minimum numbers?
  • Is there wheel chair access for disabled guests?
  • What is the check in and check out times for your guests?
  • Are there are any structural upgrades or decorating being planned? If so when are they being done? and what are they?
  • Are there any restrictions on where you can take photographs?
  • Finally check and read through the paperwork and contract before signing anything.

Checking the details will ensure you have the perfect venue without hidden costs or surprises. Most of all you must feel comfortable and have a good relationship with the venue staff. One last word of advice, if you are not fully satisfied or your instincts tell you that something is wrong walk away.

I hope this gives you some insight into choosing your perfect venue. If you do need help you can always use our venue sourcing service. Call or contact us to see what we can offer.

Until next time, happy planning.

Bridalicious – Get Fit For Your Big Day

March 1st, 2012 No Comments
rule

Hope you read last weeks blog on how to get lean taut and terrific for your big day.

We are running fitness tips every thursday for the next few weeks to really get you in the swing for the summer. No crash diets either it’s all about changing your lifestyle to be healthy.

Gail our resident PT tells us more, so read on and start your way to feeling fantastic today!

Hi Welcome to my Pre Wedding Fitness tips how to look and feel super gorgeous on the big day.

Don’t leave it to the last minute, start now and aim for a 1/1.5lb weekly loss that you can maintain and create great eating habits that stay with you for life.

How are we going to do that? Well as I said in last weeks post it’s not just about following a diet it’s about changing that hard wiring in your head that has for years encouraged you to make the wrong choices. Today we are looking at making ourselves aware of this and identifying yourself when those wrong choices occur and why.

First of all don’t believe that you have always been overweight. When you where born you were not born fat, weight is something that you have put on over time. Something you have been doing automatically over many years by making wrong choices.

Eg. Eating when your not hungry.Do you eat when you feel any of the following feelings?

Bored, Tired, Frustrates,Sad, Jealous, angry, excited, fat,Stressed? It is really important to be able to identify what type of food you reach for during these emotions as then we can start to re wire your head.

People often believe that they were born fat or their parents used to overeat so they all have ‘big appetites’ or they can never change.

All this is just not true, it just does take time to re-train the mind into good choices. If you consistently tell yourself that you don’t like exercise and you could never like vegetables then guess what ..You won’t!

As I said before start by making comfortable changes and when you have accepted those make a few more comfortable changes…
This may seem unreal to you but it really is just a matter of repeatedly doing something to make a new habit. The brain is a very sophisticated tool so give it a job and it will deliver.

For today just take notice of what little habits that you have fell into other than diet and exercise. Maybe you always park in the same space, wake up and go through exactly the same process each morning to get ready for work, watch the same things on tv. Do you feel irritable if you can’t park  etc? All this is because you have wired the brain to do these daily things.

Today start to make some changes to your lifestyle, park in a different space, don’t eat whilst watching the news, change your regular latte and chocolate bar to a herbal tea and piece and fruit after your stressful meeting.

Well done! you are on the way to re-wiring your mind for life its that easy.

I am always being asked how can you eat those healthy foods, don’t you find them bland? They say “you are lucky because you like eating salad” etc.

Well I wasn’t born liking them, I can remember persuading my mum to let me eat high sugar yoghurt, crisps and a small choc bar instead of my home made dinner. That moment was exactly when I started to yo yo with crash diets wondering where I had gone wrong as surely I am eating less?

So I chomped my way through ham salads, fruit and natural yoghurt thinking give me sugar, sauce, NOW!

Then slowly I started to notice the tastes of the different leaves and the taste of a film of fat on the roof of my mouth after drinking hot chocolate or eating ice cream. The salt in crisps became overpowering and like eating salted paper. Alcohol affected me easier so I was unable to drink as much and after all that I noticed how much more energised I felt, my skin and hair changed for the better and my mood was always up.

All the above convinced me I was on the right path. The trade off is just a very easy choice and now a comfortable one.

However I did wean myself off steadily, ie Chocolate changed to Jelly babies to Dried fruit to fruit to veg and hummus.

Below are a few ideas of Bad, Better, Best foods to help you make the right choices. This week even if you move into the ‘Better’ category you will see things changing in your body.

BAD

  • Pre made sandwich from shop made with white bread.
  • Biscuits/Cookies
  • Crisps

BETTER

  • Rye Bread Sandwich
  • Kettle Chips
  • Rice Cakes with Peanut Butter

BEST

  • Open topped Rye Bread Sandwich with Tuna,Meat, Tofu

Finding the Perfect Venue – Questions to ask

February 29th, 2012 3 Comments
rule

In our series this week on venues we now concentrate on what questions to ask and what to take into consideration before you make the final decision. Your venue is one of the most important choices you make when planning your wedding so be sure to have all the information you need, and be happy and clear with what the venue are offering in terms of the services and the options available.

As a guide here are some things to be sure to look for and enquire about before making your final choice.

Look around and Ask Questions

  • Walk around the venue and get a feel for the atmosphere. Most brides I have spoken to feel really comfortable and at home in a venue as soon as they walk inside. You and your new husband will be spending the very first hours of being married here with the most important people in your life so it should definitely be a place you feel comfortable in.
  • Is everywhere clean and well kept? This will give you an idea of how the venue is maintained.
  • Does the decor fit with your theme? Contemporary modern furniture may not be acceptable if your vision is classic and traditional.
  • The venue staff should be professional but friendly and approachable. You need to feel they will look after you as well as your guests.
  • If your guests are likely to be staying at the venue ask to be shown the bedrooms to check their suitability.
  • Will they offer a group discount you can pass on to your guests? If so how long will they hold the rooms before they need to be booked? Also they should give you a reservation number or ask them how to let your guests know what to ask for when they call to book a room. (You can put this information in the invitations.)
  • Check to see if they have a dedicated wedding coordinator on the day. Many venues use events coordinators to help book the wedding but often they do not work at the weekends. There will be a duty manager and whilst being excellent their main aim is to look after the food and drink. You may need to consider someone to help you set up tables, place favours and liaise with suppliers in the run up to the wedding. On the day then you can relax and enjoy the whole day without worry.
  • Check out the gardens and facilities on offer if your wedding is going to take place over a weekend. Your guests may want to make use of the facilities and you need to know if they have to be booked prior to their arrival.
  • Is there enough parking for your guests? If not ask where the nearest car park is.
  • Are there any restrictions on photographs being taken?

Think about Your Budget

What packages can the venue offer? Will they be flexible? For instance, to reduce costs you may want to serve your wedding cake as a sweet instead of paying for desert. Will they allow this?  If so will they charge you for cutting the cake and serving it? Is there the possibility of bringing your own wine? If so what is the corkage price? If you are planning to stay at the venue do they offer a bridal suite within the package? This can be quite an expense and if you can negotiate this to be included it’s quite a saving. During this credit crunch period  you may very well get a good deal, but you have to ask.

Here are few more things to ask and think about regarding what is offered

  • What exactly is covered within each package? Be sure you are crystal clear.
  • Check if wine is included within the package, can you upgrade to different wines if you want to? What are the corkage costs if you can bring your own. They are often more expensive so do beware.
  • Can you use your own caterers? If not ask who they want you to use.
  • Is there an extra hire fee for the ceremony room? Try and get this rolled in within the package. If you don’t ask you don’t get!
  • Is it extra to hire a cake stand? Cake knife or the board and easel for the table plan? Or are they included?
  • What table linen is offered?
  • If you get married mid week ask for the charges, they should be lower. It’s a thought if you really love the venue but can’t afford the weekend costs.
  • Are there any flowers or decorations within the package? Often the in house florist may be able to match the flowers that they are doing for the hotel to your theme.
  • Is the price quoted with VAT? Will there be any inflationary costs if you are booking a year in advance?
  • When do they need a deposit and when is the final payment? – Make sure it comes in line with your savings if you need to add to them for the venue costs.
  • What are the cancellation terms and conditions?

Phew its a lot to consider, but not so fast. There are a few more important issues to cover before you have all the information you need to make your final choice. Come back and visit on Friday for the final blog on Choosing the “Perfect Venue”.

Until then, happy planning.

Finding The Perfect Venue – How to start?

February 28th, 2012 1 Comment

Photography by www.lesleymeredith.co.ukI have been writing an article for the blog Adore by Chloe all about the best venues in the West Midlands so I thought I would revisit how to choose a venue and what to look for.

Apart from setting your budget, working out your guest list and wedding date, finding the venue is the next important thing to do when planning your wedding. Securing your venue as early as possible will save disappointment. Many of the popular ones are booked well in advance, decide on the style and type of wedding you want so you can start the hunt for your perfect venue.

I thought I would give you a helping hand with some of our top tips and advice. I will be running three blogs this week on all aspects of choosing and deciding on the perfect venue. First of all check out the advice below:-

The Ceremony – Church Vs Civil

If you are having a church ceremony you need to look at venues that are no more than 30 minutes drive away. You may consider providing transport for your guests if you fall in love with a venue that is just a bit too far for comfort. You don’t want your guests getting lost or stuck in traffic. Civil Ceremonies are very popular now and many venues are licensed to marry you, but check if they have a licence before you go and view. To help you find which venues are authorised to marry you, try The Direct Gov website you can search by post code and it will show you venues listed in your area.

Style of Venue and Surroundings

What style of venue do you want? Make the sure the venue matches the style or theme you have in your mind. Before you spend time looking at venues you can narrow the task down by thinking about what type of venue you actually want and what your budget will allow. Here a few types of venue to think about:-

  • Hotels – these are great if you want an inclusive package. Generally most things are provided and they usually offer various packages to suit your budget and needs. Often they have a good supplier list too. Make sure the suppliers are independent though. By that I mean not paid by the venue, you want the right supplier for you not because they are paid commission by the venue.
  • Marquee Weddings – You can seriously put your stamp on your wedding in a marquee. They are a plain canvas for you to do as you wish. A word of caution though, do not go for this type of venue if you are not prepared to spend a lot of time researching and organising. Its much tougher arranging for services such as caterers, hiring toilets, decorating the marquee, you may even have to hire the tables and chairs etc. Make sure you have the time or hire a wedding planner to help you out.
  • Stately Homes or Historic Properties – These are great for exclusive use. You and your guests have the run of the venue for the whole day and night. Most of them can accommodate small or large weddings. You would not have to worry about bumping into another bride, you can be guaranteed private use.
  • Local halls or Social Clubs – These are very popular if you are on a strict budget. Often you can decorate how you like and really transform the room.

Where to look for venues?

Finding venues on the internet is very easy these days. There are many wedding planning sites available that categorise venues per area and style.  Try sites such as Hitched.co.uk You can also purchase  local wedding magazines such as Your West Midlands Wedding Magazine, they often focus on local venues and their information is a great starting point. Ask you friends and family about venues they know about, you may have already been to a friends wedding at a venue you fell in love with. Check out my latest roundup of the best venues in The West Midlands. I guest blogged for yesterday and will pop this on my blog during this week.

Here are a few more things to consider when deciding on the type of venue

  • Your budget - how much do you have for room hire or for the packages on offer?
  • How many guests will be at your wedding? – can the venue accommodate them for your day and evening reception? Often numbers are restricted for the ceremony. Make sure you check this against your guest list. They are generally very strict for the ceremony because the venue will be licensed for a certain amount.
  • Do you want your guests to stay over? does the venue have enough rooms to accommodate them?
  • Check out the surrounding areas if you want to make a weekend of it. Its lovely if your guests can have something to do the night before or on the day before the ceremony if your service is to be held a little later.
  • Food - Do you want to cater yourself? check if the venue allows this.If not find out who they want you to use. Often it is good when the caterer knows the venue and is used to using their kitchens and surroundings.

Shortlist to three venues and then make appointments to see them. Do check first that they are available on your wedding date before you go and see them.

Now I have given you some idea of where to start looking for a venue and what type, the next blog will cover questions to ask when viewing and how to make the right decisions. Finding the perfect venue is time consuming but very worthwhile. You need to feel comfortable with the surroundings and the staff, and of course be clear on what they are offering you. If you want help just give us a call or email us and I will get to work right away on finding the perfect venue for you.

So until Wednesday when we cover this aspect, happy planning.

Wedding Genie Hot Topic – Entertainment for everyone

February 24th, 2012 No Comments
rule

I was a little greedy in the last edition of Your West Midlands Magazine. I got to write two hot topics!! This time it was how to choose entertainment to suit you and your guests. Here is the question posed by the couple who wrote into the magazine.

My Fiancé and I can’t decide what kind of entertainment to have. While we love to choose something meaningful to us (we’re a couple of rockers at heart and met at a gig), we’re wondering if we should go for something more mainstream that more of our guts are likely to enjoy. Do you have any suggestions?

You’re right to realise not all of your guests will have the same taste in music as you and although some may appreciate a little rock, older friends and family members probably won’t enjoy a whole night of it. I would suggest booking a contemporary band that covers all types of music.

That way, you can please everyone, including yourselves. One of our real weddings had the same scenario so I suggested a brilliant band. iPop a professional band that covers many modern pop and rock artists. You could even ask them to perform your favourite rock track for the first dance, in a nod to how you met.

A DJ is also great for putting together an assortment of music, including a rock session for you and your fellow rockers. The DJ of my choice would Sounds Fishy – the company has a great repertoire and can cater for everyone, just tell them what you want.

Think carefully about the entertainment you provide, you do have to appeal to everyone. The last thing you want is bored unhappy guests. Check out these blog posts for more information on what to think about and suggestions. By the way the entertainers we suggest are all part of our Wedding Genie Dream Team. I can highly recommend them because I know them and have worked with them. Entertainment is not a cheap area of the wedding budget so choose wisely.

Until next time, happy planning.
